NJCAA Men's Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2023
Jerry Carrillo | Coach | Cochise College (AZ)
Jerry Carrillo is in his 29th season as the head coach of the Cochise Apaches. Over the past 28 years, Cochise has amassed 627 wins under Carrillo's leadership, which breaks the record for most wins under one head coach at Cochise College. Carillo has lead the Apaches to 25 consecutive Region 1 playoff appearances, including the Region 1 Championship in 2000, 2001, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2021, and 2022. His 1999-00, 2009-10, and 2011-12 squads won the ACCAC Conference titles outright. His 2000-01 and 2015-16 squads were co-champions of the ACCAC. His 2019-2023 squads won 5 straight Conference Championships.
Carrillo was named the ACCAC/Region 1 Coach of the Year in 2005-06. He was chosen by the NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association to coach the National JUCO team in 2004. Carillo was selected as the floor coach by USA basketball for the 2011 USA Men's U19 team.
Carrillo has sent well over 100 student-athletes to four-year universities since being at Cochise. Prior to Cochise, he was the assistant coach at Cal-State Northridge University for two years, the assistant coach at Jamestown Community College for one season, and the head boy's basketball coach at Buena High School for three years.
Jerry Carrillo attended the University of Arizona where he received his B.S. in Physical Education and went on to acquire his M.S. in Kinesiology at Cal-State University-Northridge.
Scott Schumacher | Coach | Blinn College (TX)
For more than 30 years, Scott Schumacher has been a staple in the NJCAA Basketball community. With head coaching stints at Paris Junior College (TX), Kilgore College (TX), North Dakota State College of Science, and now Blinn College, Schumacher entered the 2022-23 season with a career coaching record of 611-373, including a 185-125 record at Blinn. Schumacher ranks 13th all-time in wins among active men's basketball coaches across 439 NJCAA programs. Schumacher has led three different junior college programs to conference championships and top-10 national rankings in the NJCAA polls. In five of the last seven seasons, Schumacher has led the Buccaneers to claim 20 or more wins.
Schumacher has coached 12 NJCAA All-Americans. More than 85 of his players have signed Division I scholarships and more than 37 have gone on to play professionally. In addition to his leadership on the court, Schumacher has been a strong supporter on the national level as well. Schumacher served two terms as president of the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Association, a position voted upon by his colleagues.
Schumacher is currently in his 11th year as the athletic director at Blinn College. Under his leadership, the Buccaneers' athletic department has won 16 national championships in various sports.
Herbert Jones | Student-Athlete | Butler Community College (KS)
Herbert Jones attended Butler Community College where he played two seasons for the Grizzlies from 1988-1990. During this time, Jones earned numerous accolades including being named a two-time NJCAA All-America, two-time All-Region 6, and two-time All-KJCCC West. During his sophomore campaign, Jones was named the NJCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Year. Jones concluded his career as a Grizzly as the all-time Region 6 leading scorer and set program records for field goals attempted in a game (32) and field goal percentage in a game (1.000, 13/13).
Over two seasons, Jones accumulated 1,732 points, 26.3 points per game, 14.5 rebounds per game, and a .665 field goal percentage.
Jerry Mullen | Contributor | Mullen Sports Enterprises
Jerry Mullen served as the head men's basketball coach for Cowley County Community College (KS) from 1973 until 1979. While leading the Tigers, Mullen compiled a record of 107-67 over the course of six seasons. During his last two seasons at Cowley, the Tigers were nationally ranked and won the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division title. After Cowley, Mullen went on to serve as the men's basketball coach and athletic director at Barton County Community College (KS) where he had a record of 121-66. In 1985, after Barton, he retired from coaching.
Mullen has since continued to have a career in athletics and in 1985 founded Mullen Sports, a junior college scouting service. He then incorporated Mullen Sports into the now Mullen Sports Enterprises with summer camps, shootouts, and junior college scouting. Mullen Sports Enterprises sponsors the Top 100 JUCO camp which is a high-profile team tournament and shootouts for unsigned players.
